BiteDance Holds All Hands Meeting: Performance Adjustment and One-Time M+ for Promotion
Technews, July 31st. According to reports, ByteDance recently held its new all-hands meeting, where the main topic was the related situation regarding performance adjustment.
Regarding the previous internal notification on performance adjustment, ByteDance explained that performance adjustment is aimed at reducing internal competition and emphasized that there's not a significant difference between M and M+. In the past, around 45-50% of employees in E and above levels were motivated to work hard, with differences existing among departments. M represents meeting expectations, while M- does not mean elimination; two consecutive M-'s do not imply termination.
At the same time, the company has increased the flexibility of promotions. Previously, employees had to achieve two consecutive M+ results to be nominated for promotion, but now a single M+ is sufficient.
It was also learned that ByteDance has made relevant adjustments to its "living water" policy, where living water no longer requires performance to meet the M+ standard. The data shows that after the adjustment, the ratio of employees who have gone through living water to those still employed rose by 5%, with over 100 M- employees successfully making the transition.
The all-hands meeting also refuted the previous claim that "ByteDance employees are generally employed for 7 months." According to ByteDance's data, the median tenure of in-service employees is 2.9 years, while the average tenure is 3.0 years; the median and average tenures of out-of-service employees are 2.5 years and 2.6 years respectively.
