Chinese Bank Credit Card Lawsuit Fees Will Be Added to the Bill, Shanghai Region First to Implement
If a credit card lawsuit fee is triggered due to late payment, who should be responsible?
On July 30th, China's Bank published an announcement stating that starting from September 14th, 2025, the bank will include relevant lawsuit fees in the bill for credit card accounts that have incurred overdue-related expenses. The policy will roll out in phases, with Shanghai Branch being the first to implement it on September 14th, followed by Shanghai and other regions on October 11th and October 19th respectively.
The bank clarified that the fee will be calculated based on the court's judgment or arbitration decision, and will be added to the credit card bill. The fees will not include interest and penalty charges.

The bank also reminded customers that they can check the fees through their credit card statements. Repayment methods include in-person, online banking, mobile banking, and self-service machines.
According to financial analysts, this move may be aimed at reducing costs, as it is a continuation of the trend of credit card companies reducing benefits and increasing fees. The bank's adjustment is an attempt to optimize its credit structure, enhance risk monitoring and control, and stabilize asset quality.
In terms of bad debt, the bank reported that as of 2024 year-end, non-performing assets (NPAs) accounted for 1.73% of total assets, a decrease from 1.83% in the previous year. The bank's NPA ratio was 0.46%, an increase of 0.16 percentage points compared to the previous year.
The personal finance sector also saw changes, with the bank stating that it will adjust its consumer loan policies and product offerings, focusing on risk control and asset quality.
