MIC Releases Data on China's Internet Industry Development for H1 2025
According to data released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) on July 31, China's large-scale internet and related service enterprises achieved a total of 9613 billion yuan in internet business revenue for the first half of 2025, representing a year-on-year growth of 3.1%, an increase of 2.2 percentage points compared to the previous quarter; internet business revenue growth accelerated, with a decrease in profit margins.

2025 Half-Year Internet and Related Services Industry Development Situation
I. Overall Development Situation
Internet business revenue growth accelerated. For the first half of 2025, China's large-scale internet and related service enterprises (hereinafter referred to as internet enterprises) achieved a total of 9613 billion yuan in internet business revenue, representing a year-on-year growth of 3.1%, an increase of 2.2 percentage points compared to the previous quarter.
Profit margins decreased steadily. For the first half of 2025, China's large-scale internet enterprises achieved a total profit of 743.2 billion yuan, down 8.3% year-on-year, with a decrease in profit margins expanded by 6.1 percentage points compared to the previous quarter.
R&D expenses remained stable. For the first half of 2025, China's large-scale internet enterprises invested a total of 485.6 billion yuan in R&D funds, up 2.6% year-on-year, with a decrease in growth rate by 1.5 percentage points compared to the previous quarter.
II. Regional Development Situation
The eastern region leads in revenue growth, while the western region's internet business revenue growth slows down. For the first half of 2025, the eastern region achieved a total of 8633 billion yuan in internet business revenue, up 5.3% year-on-year, and accounted for 89.8% of the national internet business revenue. The central region achieved a total of 380.4 billion yuan in internet business revenue, down 30%. The western region achieved a total of 581 billion yuan in internet business revenue, up 2.7%. The northeastern region achieved a total of 19.3 billion yuan in internet business revenue, down 18.8%.
The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region maintains its fast-growing momentum. For the first half of 2025, the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region achieved a total of 3310 billion yuan in internet business revenue, up 7.4%, and accounted for 34.4% of the national internet business revenue. The Yangtze River Delta region achieved a total of 3128 billion yuan in internet business revenue, up 4.6%, and accounted for 32.5% of the national internet business revenue.
More than one-third of regions achieved positive growth in internet business revenue. For the first half of 2025, the top five provinces with the highest cumulative internet business revenue were Beijing (8.2%), Guangdong (7.8%), Shanghai (3%), Zhejiang (10.4%), and Guizhou (5.7%), which together accounted for 84.3% of the national (excluding cross-regional enterprises) internet business revenue. There were 11 provinces with positive growth in internet business revenue, including Zhejiang, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, Sichuan, Shaanxi, which had growth rates above 10%.
