AI Assistant Evolves! Microsoft (MSFT.US) to Deeply Embed Copilot in Browser, Redefining User Search Experience
According to Zhong Tong Finance APP, Microsoft (MSFT.US) is integrating its Copilot AI assistant more deeply into its browser, hoping that users will find the service helpful when processing information and browsing web pages. Microsoft announced a new Copilot mode for Microsoft Edge browsers on Monday, calling it an experiment. Once enabled, opening a new browser tab will integrate Microsoft's AI assistant and webpage search functionality into a single text box.
Copilot will be able to read information across browser tabs. The software can respond to voice commands and extract information from web pages, including skipping ads.
This move is part of a broader transformation, as AI tools are replacing traditional online functions. Chatbots have already become alternatives to network searches, with many tech experts saying that these products may eventually replace browsers, becoming the default way for some people to browse the internet.
Alphabet's (GOOGL.US) Google is also committed to integrating its Gemini assistant into Chrome browser. Earlier this year, the company added a so-called "AI mode" to its web search.
Sean Lyndersay, vice president responsible for Edge product development, wrote in a blog post: "We are witnessing a turning point in how we interact with the internet."
Previously, Edge users could access Copilot's limited functionality by clicking on the blue whirlpool icon at the top of the browser. The new Copilot mode requires users to opt-in themselves and can be disabled in the Edge browser settings.
