New Energy Pickups in China See 700% Increase in First 7 Months
【Reporter Zhang Keruo】August 14, the China Automobile Dealers Association Passenger Car Market Information Sub-Committee (hereinafter referred to as the Passenger Car Market Information Sub-Committee) released July's pickup sales data. In July, new energy pickups sold 4,000 units, a year-on-year increase of 182%, and a month-on-month decrease of 41%; from January to July, new energy pickups sold 46,000 units, an increase of 702%, forming a strong trend exceeding that of gasoline-powered pickups.
From the cumulative sales data of new energy pickups in the first seven months, the performance of new energy pickup market in 2025 continued the good momentum seen in 2024. The Passenger Car Market Information Sub-Committee data showed that in 2024, China's new energy pickup sales reached 21,200 units, a year-on-year increase of 170%.
According to Secretary-General Cui Dongsheng, the demand for electric light commercial vehicles has increased significantly in 2025, and electrification is the best way to improve commercial vehicle rights. As electrification and popularization continue to develop, the market space for pickups will gradually expand.
Specifically, among the top manufacturers, BYD sold 1,814 units of new energy pickups in July, Geely Radar Electric Pickup sold 1,430 units, Changan New Energy Pickup sold 555 units, Zhengzhou Nissan sold 317 units, and other pickup companies also had a certain scale.
Cui Dongsheng said that with the domestic new energy pickup market starting to take shape and being cultivated, it is expected that China's pickups will continue to develop rapidly to meet domestic and foreign demand.
In terms of the Chinese pickup market, according to the Passenger Car Market Information Sub-Committee data, July sales reached 41,000 units, a year-on-year increase of 1.7%, and a month-on-month decrease of 15%, at a mid-five-year level. From January to July, the market sold 348,000 units, an increase of 11%.
Cui Dongsheng introduced that the main regions for pickup sales are in the southwest and northwest, with 45% of total demand coming from these areas. As new energy pickups develop, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and other Guangdong-based new energy pickup markets will grow stronger.
In terms of exports, July's pickup exports reached 23,000 units, a year-on-year decrease of 13%, but still an increase of 13% compared to the same period last year. In 2024, pickups accounted for 45% of total sales, while in 2025, it reached 56% from January to July, with China's self-owned pickup exports showing significant growth.
Some pickup companies have taken advantage of export opportunities and achieved strong increases, such as Jiangxi Automobile, BYD, SAIC-GM-Wuling, Changan Automobile, and Great Wall Motor, whose export volumes are all above 50% of their total sales. As a type of internationalized vehicle, pickups have become the strongest category in China's commercial vehicle exports.
