Tesla Orders Disbandment of Supercomputer Team, Responsible Person Steps Down
Tesla Disbands Dojo Team
Phoenix Technology News, Beijing Time August 8, according to a Bloomberg report, sources revealed that Tesla will disband its Dojo supercomputer team, with the team's leader stepping down. This move may disrupt Tesla's plan to develop self-research chips for autonomous driving technology.
Sources say Peter Bannon, responsible for the Dojo project, will leave the company. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has ordered the closure of this project. In recent months, approximately 20 members of the Dojo team have jumped ship to join DensityAI, a newly established company, while remaining Dojo employees have been reassigned to other data centers and computing projects within Tesla.
Tesla plans to increase its reliance on external technology partners, including NVIDIA and AMD's computing technologies, as well as Samsung Electronics' chip manufacturing services.
This decision marks a major turning point for Tesla's development of this project. Dojo has been viewed as the core of Tesla's valuable $30 billion plan to boost its AI capabilities in autonomous driving.
Dojo is a supercomputer designed and developed by Tesla, used to train machine learning models for its Autopilot and Full Self-Driving systems, as well as its humanoid robot Optimus. This computer can receive data from vehicles and process it quickly to improve the company's algorithm performance. Analysts have pointed out that Dojo may become a crucial competitive advantage for Tesla.
However, Musk hinted at strategic shifts during Tesla's recent quarterly earnings call, stating that future self-research technologies may converge with those of partners. During his July 23 phone call, he said, "We hope to achieve this fusion [of Dojo and AI6 reasoning chips] in a sense – it's essentially the same chip.""
Last year, Musk also acknowledged that the company may not push forward with the Dojo project, instead relying more on external partners.
As of press time, Tesla, Musk, and Bannon have yet to comment on this matter. (Author/Arbor Rain)
